Transport workers have declared that they will continue their strike on 41 routes of Khulna and Jessore until their demand for the release of a bus driver is met.

The strike is continuing on 18 routes of Khulna and 23 routes in Jessore, Shahadat Hossain Mridha and Mortuza Hossain, general secretaries of Khulna and Jessore motor sramik unions, confirmed on Thursday.

The workers enforced the strike Wednesday morning in 21 districts for the release of Jamir Uddin, driver of the bus which killed five persons, including filmmaker Tareque Masud and media personality Ashfaque Munier Mishuk, in Manikganj on August 13.

The driver was arrested from Meherpur on August 15.

Six hours after the strike began on Wednesday, the transport workers called it off claiming that Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain had assured them of fulfilling their demands.

However, the minister categorically denied knowing anything about the demand for releasing Jamir Uddin.

Two hours after the strike was withdrawn, Khulna and Jessore motor sramik unions declared that they would continue the strike on 41 routes until the driver is released.
